Overview

This unit introduces the student to the concepts of health and illness as they relate to health indicators for vulnerable groups, and local and global healthcare. The influence of the social determinants of health will be explored as they impact on the health and personal wellbeing of individuals.

On successful completion of this unit/assessment, you should be able to:

1.Identify population health indicators particularly as they relate to vulnerable groups including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people;

2.Describe the social determinants of health including environmental determinants and the impact of climate change on global health;

3.Discuss the role of the nurse/midwife in mitigation and adaptation;

4. Identify personally held values, beliefs and cultural orientation;

5. Discuss the characteristics of a culturally competent health care workforce and health care system;

6.Describe the role that health promotion and population screening play as preventative measures within health care systems locally and globally.

Assessment

  • Written Assignment (2,500 words) (35%)
  • Group synopsis (1,000 words) + Group presentation (10 min) (25%

Assessment in this unit includes hurdle assessment tasks. Failure of any hurdle assessment task may result in failure of the unit
