Week 4 Discussion 2: Social Stigma
Research studies show that women who are over-weight experience more cases of stigmatization due to their weight than their male counterparts. Such women are stigmatized at least three times a day. Particularly, they are exposed to social stigma. A background in a study that was conducted recently shows that cases of stigmatization of overweight people have risen substantially in the last two decades. These cases of stigmatization have apparently been disproportionately targeted at women in as much as both men and women have similar rates of obesity.
Usually, weight-related stigmatization that women are exposed to takes many forms. For example, they are sometimes exposed to interpersonal stigmatization (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2018). In relation to this, they are sometimes shamed or ridiculed due to their weight.
