Solution

Standardized terminology (SNT) is a universal language that is understood by all stakeholders involved. It is how information is transmitted without misunderstandings because they mean the same thing to everyone. This supports interoperability between all health information systems (HIT) (Chamberlain, 2019).

For nurses specifically, standardized terminology means “better communication among nurses and other health care providers, increased visibility of nursing interventions, improved patient care, enhanced data collection to evaluate nursing care outcomes, greater adherence to standards of care, and facilitated assessment of nursing competency.” (Rutherford, 2008, Abstract, para 1). For instance, hospitals are reimbursed through data collected for nursing care interventions that are documented. For this reason, specific domains for nursing interventions to be documented have been integrated into the clinical information systems (CIS) for data to be easily retrieved and inspected.
