Module Overview
At the end of the module, students will be able to:
- Develop an understanding of applied microbiology, host defence mechanisms and the function of the laboratory in IPC
- Use epidemiological, audit and surveillance data to determine appropriate interventions to prevent and control infection
- Recognise and investigate incidents and outbreaks
- Implement effective, evidence-based practices such as standard and transmission based precautions
- Discuss the aetiology of preventable healthcare-associated infections
- Explore mechanisms to promote antimicrobial stewardship and manage antibiotic resistant organisms
- Engage in critical reflection to enhance personal and professional developmen
Assessment Strategy
The assessment strategy allows students to address issues in their setting, and consists of:
- Part 1: Online assessment (20%) – Multiple choice questions
- Part 2: Essay (3000 words, 80%) – Critical, fully referenced reflective account on an area of practice, with recommendations for improvement
